Over three million Americans already have dental implants, and another 500,000 people join their ranks every year.
One of the most commonly asked questions these patients (and their dentists) hear is: Do dental implants hurt?
It’s a valid question, as the idea may seem a bit intimidating at first. You’ve undoubtedly heard about the benefits of dental implants, but what can you expect during and after the procedure? Is it worth it to get beautiful, healthy teeth and gums?
Keep reading below as we answer these important questions about dental implants.
Understanding the Dental Implant Procedure
Once your dentist determines that you’re a good candidate, you will undergo a small surgical procedure to place the implant.
First, the dentist will numb your gums with a local anesthetic (similar to when you get a filling or other procedure). Once the area is totally numb, the dentist will make an incision to expose your jawbone. From here, your dentist will drill a small hole and insert the titanium post.
You may need one or two stitches to close up the incision site after the surgery is complete. The metal post will be covered with a temporary cap while you heal, after which you’ll receive your permanent crown.
Do Dental Implants Hurt?
With words like “surgery,” “incision,” and “drilling,” you may fear that the procedure will be painful.
The good news is that the local anesthetic ensures you won’t feel pain during the actual procedure. Some patients report feeling “pressure” during drilling, but you shouldn’t feel any pain while the anesthetic is still in effect.
Keep in mind, however, that the dental implant procedure is still a surgery (albeit a minor one). As the anesthesia wears off, most patients will experience some pain and discomfort around the incision site. However, it shouldn’t be severe and it shouldn’t last longer than a few days.
What to Expect During Recovery
Depending on the number of implants you receive and your unique case, your dentist will send you home with specific instructions.
For the first few days after the procedure, you may experience pain and discomfort along with minor bruising, swelling, or bleeding. This is normal and you should be able to manage your symptoms with over-the-counter medications.
Your dentist may advise you to use ice packs on your jaw to ease discomfort and aid the healing process. You’ll also need to avoid certain foods that are very crunchy or sticky while you heal.
Most patients are able to resume their normal activities the following day. Discomfort around the surgical site should last a maximum of three to five days. Bruising, swelling, and jaw stiffness may last a bit longer, up to a week or 10 days.
