What Are the Different Types of Dental Implants?

Did you know US dentists place 5 million implants each year?

Implants are an excellent choice for people with missing or damaged teeth. They’re also the ideal alternative to traditional dentures and bridges. But the kind of dental implant you can get depends on your oral health.

What are the different types of dental implants, and which one is right for you? We’re about to answer both of those questions in this guide, so you better keep reading.

What Are the Different Types of Dental Implants?

All dental implants consist of a titanium post or screw, which acts as the “root” of the new tooth, plus a crown. The crown is the enamel-like covering that looks and acts like your own natural tooth.

From this general definition, dentists categorize different dental implants based on:

  1. The type of implant, including the shape and type of screw or post
  2. What kind of procedure the dentist uses to install the implant

The former category includes Endosteal, Subperioseal, and Zygomatic implant types. The latter includes two-stage, single-stage, and immediate loading procedures.

Endosteal and Subperiosteal Implants

Endosteal and Subperiosteal implants are the most common types of dental implants.

Patients with healthy jawbones are ideal candidates for Endosteal implants. Dentists install into the jawbone a post with a tiny screw attached. Once healed, the dentist screws the crown in place over the post.

Subperiosteal implants are for patients with damaged or not enough jawbone. Dentists surgically place a metal frame beneath the gums. After healing, the dentist secures the crown to the metal posts protruding from the frame.

Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implants are another alternative to Endosteal implants. These procedures are usually reserved for patients with severe jawbone deterioration.

During this procedure, the dentist installs long titanium screws into the zygoma bone. The dentist then affixes the crown over the screw, much like with an Endosteal implant.

The benefit of this type of implant is that the dentist can install it in a single procedure. That means patients can use their new teeth almost immediately and experience much faster recovery.

Two-Stage and Single-Stage Procedures

Most dentists use two-stage implantation procedures. After the dentist places the post in the jawbone, they’ll stitch the gums closed. The crown gets installed in a second surgical procedure.

Single-stage implantation procedures are slightly less common. Patients only have to undergo one initial surgery to install the post. Once the incision heals, the dentist places the crown during an office procedure, no surgery required.

Immediate Loading Procedures

Immediate loading procedures are for patients with ideal jawbone health. With immediate loading, dentists combine tooth extraction and post placement in one procedure. Dental implant placement occurs in a non-surgical follow-up appointment.

Endosteal and Subperiosteal are the most common dental implants, but Zygomatic implants are also available. The choice of procedure will depend on your oral health and your dentist’s preference.
